What is an impact factor?

An impact factor is a way of measuring the relative importance of a journal within a particular discipline. Impact factors can be found within the database Journal Citation Reports (JCR), a unique resource tool that allows evaluation and comparison of journals using citation data drawn from over 7,000 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries.

JCR indicates most frequently cited journals within a field. Citation and article counts are important indicators of how frequently current researchers are using individual journals. By tabulating and aggregating citation and article counts, JCR offers a unique perspective for journal evaluation and comparison.

Go to the JCR site for more information.
