Archives

Historic materials (archives) are divided into two categories. Papers refer to manuscripts such as letters, diaries, photographs, etc. and records refer to documents such as electoral rolls, meeting minutes and ship logs. Some useful places to access archives are:

Trove provides a single access point to a wealth of historic data about Australia and Australians. Letters, diaries, government documents, maps, photographs, music, and full text of some Australian newspapers from as early as 1803 are among the many types of material found in Trove. It also contains archived Australian websites. Australian and overseas sources are indexed.

Archives of Australia is a collaboration between the National Archives of Australia, the State and Territory archives, and a number of other Australian archive organisations.

State Library of New South Wales contains manuscripts, oral history and images from the collections of the Mitchell Library, Sir William Dixon Library and Dixon Galleries. Materials catalogued prior to 1992 are listed in a card catalogue which may be consulted in the Mitchell Library Reading Room.

Inthefirstperson is an index to letters, diaries, oral histories and personal narratives from around the world, including Australia.

Europena contains digitised books, films, paintings, newspapers, sounds and archives from many of Europe's major museum collections.

Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program is Systematic digitisation of archival Australian newspapers.
