  • How do I install EndNote at UWS (for PC users)

  • Q: How do I install EndNote at UWS (for PC users)

    A:

    Before installing a new version of EndNote, make sure you create a backup copy of existing EndNote library files. EndNote X4 is available from Run Advertised Programs.

    • Go to, Start > Settings > Control Panel> Run Advertised Programs.
    • Click on the install option for Thomson Reuters Endnote X4.
    • Follow the prompts to install.

    Q: I get asked for a product key when I download EndNote. How do I get this?

    A:

    A product key is not required. To install Endnote:

    • Right click on the downloaded folder and choose to extract all the files out of the zipped folder first.
    Double click on the .msi file to install.

    If you previously had the toolbar installed but can no longer see it, please see the following EndNote FAQ.
    If the process described in the EndNote FAQ above fails to restore the EndNote toolbar in Word, please complete the following:

    • Run the "Repair" function by selecting EndNote X4 in the Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista) in the Windows Control Panel.
    • Choose "Change" then select "Repair".
    Click Next on each of these screens until the process is complete.

    Q: When I use the UWS Connection file with EndNote X4, my library is automatically importing all retrieved references to the library. How can I stop this from occurring?

    A: If an Online Search is conducted from the Integrated Library & Online Search Mode (button with world and books image), results are imported into the All References folder.To avoid this, conduct the search in Online Search Mode (button with world image). Selected search results can be copied to your library and will be held in a Copied References folder to allow you to sort new references into groups.


    Q: I am using EndNote X4 at the University (Library or Computer Labs) and the EndNote toolbar is missing from Word. How can I fix this?

    A:

    Ensure that you have both EndNote program and Word closed.

    In order to have the Cite While You Write (CWYW) Microsoft Word toolbars available, you will need to:

    • Go to Start menu > Programs > Endnote > Select configure endnote.
    • There are two options. Select 'configure endnote components for me' then click on the next button.
    • On the following screen select Unified Cite While You Write for Microsoft Word then click next.
    • Once the configuration is completed you need to click finish to close the window.
    • Open Microsoft Word. You should now have all the toolbars available to you.


    Q: How do I add a new Style / Filter / Connection file to EndNote?

    A:

    If the Style / Filter / Connection File you need is not available in the version of EndNote you are using, it will need to be downloaded from another source:

    To add a style, filter or connection file to your EndNote program:

    • Click on the link of the required file
    • At the File Download window choose the Save option.
    • Use the file menu to browse for the required location:

    For Style Files: C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Styles *
    For Filter Files: C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Filters *
    For Connection Files: C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Connections *

    * Denotes typical location of directories for a Windows Operating System

    Q: How do I Install EndNote at Home? (for PC users)

    A:
    • Go to, Resources>Downloads and select the Login link.
    • Enter in your MyUWSAccount details
    • Select EndNote X4 - Windows OS link
    • At the File Download window choose the Save option. Take note of the location and click on the Save button
    • A Zip file will then be downloaded to your computer
    • Once the download has completed locate the Zip file on your computer, as you will need to extract the files before you can commence installation
    • To do this, right click on the EndNoteX4.zip file and choose the Extract All option
    • In the current window, make note of the location that the files will be extracted to. Tick the option to show extracted files when complete
    • Click Extract to start the extraction process. Choose the Next option to start the extraction process. Then, select the Finish option to view files
    • To commence installation, ensure that all other programs are closed.
      Double click on: ENX4Inst.msi to start installation.

    Note if a previous installation of EndNote is found in the same folder, you will be given the option to either back up or overwrite the older files. If you back up files, they are placed in a Backup folder in the installation folder.

      • Accept the Next prompt to initiate the installation process
      • At Select Installation Type: we recommend that you select Complete to make sure you install all options
      • At Select Destination: By default, EndNote is installed in the C:\Program Files\EndNote X4 folder. You can use the Browse button to change the folder selection if you wish.
      • Select the Finish option to close the installation program, or click Run to start EndNote.


    Q: How do I Install EndNote at Home? (for Mac users)

    A:
    • Go to, Resources>Downloads and select the Login link.
    • Enter in your MyUWSAccount details
    • Select EndNote X4 Installer - Macintosh OS link
    • At the File Download window choose the Save option. Take note of the location and click on the Save button
    • A Disk Image (dmg) file will then be downloaded to your computer
    • Once the download has completed locate the EndNote_X4_Site_Installer.dmg file on your computer and double click to start installation.


    Q: How do I merge EndNote libraries?

    A:

    There are two ways to merge libraries:
    Importing EndNote libraries

    • Open the EndNote library into which you will be importing.
    • From the File menu, select Import.
    • Select Choose file to locate the EndNote library that you wish to import.
    • Select EndNote Library from the Import Option drop down list
    • Select Discard Duplicates
    • Select Import

    Copying references between libraries
    You can also use the Copy and Paste commands in the 'Edit' menu to transfer references. Select the references that you want to copy and choose Copy (CTRL+C) from the 'Edit' menu. Open the library to which you want to add the references and choose Paste

    Q: EndNote X4 will not connect to Microsoft Word 2011 (Mac version)

    A: Once you have installed the Mac version of EndNote X4, a free update is needed to make it compatible with Word 2011 available from the EndNote Website. A fully tested EndNote X4 update will be released later in 2011.

    Q: How do I configure EndNote to find full-text articles?

    A:

    The Find Full Text feature can search and retrieve the full text of references in your Endnote library. Please note that not all databases are compatible with this feature. In cases where the full text cannot be found please search the appropriate database via e-Resources on the Library website.
    To set up the Find Full Text feature:

    • Go to the Edit menu and choose Preferences
    • Click on Find Full Text
    • Tick all options
    • At the OpenURL Path field enter: http://ea3se7mz8x.search.serialssolutions.com/
    • At the URL field enter: https://login.ezproxy.uws.edu.au/login
    • Click on OK

    To search for the full text of a reference in your library:

    • Select (highlight) the required references
    • Right click on the highlighted references and select Find Full Text> Find Full Text
    • Log in with your UWS Library details
    If a PDF file is available it will be added to the reference as an attachment.
